Valentino R. Sandoli on Narrative Freedom in LGBTQ+ Stories

Our chat with the Madrid-based director

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, raised in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and currently based in Madrid, Valentino R. Sandoli is half Canarian, half Italian. In 2020, he directed Cruising, a fashion film that premiered exclusively for Fucking Young! Magazine. He is currently developing his first feature film as well as other short film projects, while he continues with his commercial work in advertising.

Valentino is drawn to stories of the LGBTQ+ community. He says Cruising developed into a more interesting piece than originally planned. He was able to capture the characters within their true environment and was free from the burden of a strict script. The piece relies heavily on sound, music, sharp pauses and contrasting frames to give the viewer an alluring eight minutes.

In our latest edition of Long Story Short, Valentino talks to us about Tom Ford's A Single Man and having narrative freedom as a filmmaker.
